Last updated 3 October 2026 · 7 min read
Solid perfume is the quiet achiever of fragrance. It fits in a pocket, can't spill in your handbag, and gives a soft scent that stays close to you. This guide explains what solid perfume is, what it's made of, how to apply it, how long it lasts and how it compares with perfume oil and spray.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Solid perfume is fragrance set in a base of oils, butters and waxes. Most are alcohol-free.
- Warm a little on your fingertip and press it onto your pulse points. Don't rub.
- It wears softer and closer than spray. Fleurac's guide for its balm is 2 to 4 hours, so plan to top up.
- Layer a balm under a perfume oil for the longest wear.
- Refillable compacts keep the case and replace only the balm.

What is solid perfume?
Solid perfume is fragrance blended into a firm base of oils, butters and waxes instead of alcohol. It comes in a small compact or tin. You warm a little on your fingertip and press it onto your skin, where it melts and gives a soft, close scent.
Solid perfume is one of the oldest ways to wear scent, and it's back because it suits how we live now. It travels without leaking, works for quick top-ups during the day, and its gentle projection suits offices, gyms and anyone who finds sprays too much.
What is solid perfume made of?
Every solid perfume has three parts: a wax or thickener that holds its shape, oils or butters that let it melt onto skin, and the fragrance. Here are two real examples from VAMS:
| Fleurac Solid Balm | By Yuliya Solid Fragrance Balm | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Beeswax, castor oil | Corn starch, paraffin, hydrogenated castor oil |
| Oils and butters | Organic jojoba oil, shea butter | Sweet almond oil, coconut oil |
| Also contains | Bio-az® (chicory inulin, terminalia chebula extract, Bacillus subtilis and heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum), vitamin E | Vitamin E |
| Alcohol | None | None |
| Size | 4ml balm in a zinc alloy Pebble Compact | Refillable compact with magnetic refill |
| Scents | Forest Fig, Woodpetal | Twenty Four Seven, Twin Flame |

How do you use solid perfume?
- Start with moisturised skin. Scent holds better on hydrated skin. An unscented body lotion is enough.
- Warm a little on your fingertip. Glide your finger across the balm two or three times. You only need a thin layer.
- Press onto pulse points. Inside the wrists, behind the ears, the sides of the neck, the décolletage and inner elbows. Press and lightly smooth. Don't rub.
- Let it settle. Give it a minute before clothes or jewellery touch the area.
- Top up when you want it. That's the point of a compact. Keep it in your bag and reapply after lunch.
Keep balm off fabric, especially silk and light colours, as the oils can mark. More application tips in How to Apply Roll On Perfume Oil, which work for balms too.
How long does solid perfume last?
Expect a few hours. Fleurac's guide is 2 to 4 hours for its solid balm and 4 to 6 hours for its perfume oil. Wearing the balm as a base under the oil, and topping up during the day, gives the longest wear.
Solid perfume doesn't project like a spray, so it can seem to fade faster even when it's still there. Your nose also gets used to a scent you wear. Ask someone close before you reapply. Heat, dry skin and washing your hands all shorten wear, so wrists are the first place to fade.

How do you refill solid perfume?
Refillable compacts let you keep the case and replace only the balm, so there's less packaging each time.
- Fleurac: lift out the finished pan with the tool that comes with the refill, then press the new pan into the Pebble Compact. Refills are $33.
- By Yuliya: pop out the empty pan, recycle it, and click in a new magnetic refill.
How to store solid perfume in the Australian heat
Balms are made from oils and waxes, so heat softens them. Keep your compact out of hot cars, beach bags in full sun and bathroom windowsills. Close the lid after each use to keep out dust and air. If it softens on a hot day, put it somewhere cool and it will firm up again.

Solid perfume FAQs
Is solid perfume stronger than spray perfume?
No. Solid perfume is softer and sits closer to the skin. A spray projects into the air around you, while a balm stays where you put it, so people notice it when they're close to you.
Does solid perfume contain alcohol?
Usually not. Solid perfume uses oils, butters and waxes instead of alcohol. Both the Fleurac and By Yuliya balms are alcohol-free.
How long does solid perfume last?
Fleurac's guide for its solid balm is 2 to 4 hours. Balms are made for topping up, so most people reapply once or twice a day. Layering a balm under a perfume oil makes the scent last longer.
Is solid perfume vegan?
Not always. Many balms use beeswax, including Fleurac's. Check the ingredient list for beeswax, lanolin or honey if you want a vegan option.
Can you take solid perfume on a plane?
Solid perfume won't leak or spill in your bag, which makes it easy to travel with. For international flights, check your airline's current rules on balms and pastes before you pack it in your carry-on.
Can you layer solid perfume with spray or oil?
Yes. Apply the balm first as a base, then roll on oil or mist spray over the top. The Fleurac Layering Set pairs a balm and an oil in the same scent for exactly this.
Does solid perfume melt in the heat?
It can soften. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, especially in an Australian summer. If it softens, let it cool and it will firm up again.
