What is Niacinamide And Why Your Skin Needs It?
What Is Niacinamide?
Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of Vitamin B3 and is worth all of the hype! Why? Because you don't have to be a skin specialist just a skin enthusiast to work out how to use it correctly and reap, reap in its benefit. What is even more admirable about Niacinamide is that it can be used on every skin type.... hoorah for oily combination skin.
Okay, so what is it? Well, it is naturally derived from nicotinic acid found in brewers' yeast (used in the production of beer and wine) and in many kinds of cereal! Once isolated and undergoes a chemical reaction. BOOM! It becomes Niacinamide or Vitamin B3.
Niacinamide is a water-soluble wonder vitamin that is not synthesized in our bodies, meaning that in order to receive its benefits, you have to either eat it, we're talking meat, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables and cereals, just to name a few...sigh.... calories galore. Or you can skip all of that and apply it topically to reap the rewards. Honestly, in today’s modern world, what with globalization, climate challenges, food shortages and trying to be a boss, it’s hard to muster the energy to eat plentifully in order to ascertain our given right to look fabulous. This is where topical Niacinamide comes to the rescue. According to Dr. Karthik Kumar, author of medicine.net, it can assist in many skin conditions, such as fine lines, acne, pigmentation, sun damage, and narrowing of the pores.... the list is truly endless, continue reading below to see the benefits.
Benefits Of Niacinamide for Skin
Niacinamide is a little gem that should be in everyone's stable makeup bag. Its potential efficacy and safety cannot go unnoticed. I did mention before...albeit vaguely what Niacinamide can do for your skin....in this section I am about to go full skin enthusiast mode and explain the benefits of this little wonder potion. So grab a coffee, tea, or water, and let me take you on a skin drenching journey that could potentially change your life.....I know a bit dramatic, but so is Niacinamide.
Living in Australia, we are all exposed to the sun, when you were younger you did not mind sunbathing and getting that summer glow, however as we get older, we realized just how dangerous sun exposure can be and how it can negatively affect our skin. In my opinion, we have the best beaches in the world.....and I’ve been to Croatia (yes, where Game of Thrones was filmed), Albania, Montenegro and Turkey (YESSSS....Antalya and Fetiye), if you have not been, do yourself a favour and go....okay where was I? Yes, right, in my opinion we have the best beaches in the world, however, we have the harshest sun. Why?! Good question?! It mainly results in the location of Australia, we are in the southern hemisphere (down under) and due to the elliptical orbit of the earth, when we orbit, we are closer to the sun than our northern hemisphere counter parts (Europe, America etc). Meaning that because of this, we tend to burn quicker, receiving the suns harsh rays. Now I truly get the meaning of, ‘Your skin looks like a leather purse.’ Yikes! Okay, now to the good stuff.
Niacinamide assits in the repair of skin cell that has been damaged by UV rays...i.e harsh sun, it evens out skin tone as it minimizes pigmentation coming to the surface (Yes.....clear skin) and is an antioxidant. According to Dr. R, Sivamani et al., author of ‘Cosmeceuticals and Active Cosmetics, It also increases the amount of ceramides and collagen, meaning that it can reduce inflammation and plumps up your skin....yes the natural way....no needles here baby!
It is also great for acne prone skin, or even skin that has marks or scarring. Skin that is prone to redness.....the list here is endless.....let me pick out a few benefits to go into more detail.
Minimizes pigmentation – according to a clinical study conducted by the National Institute of Health in the United States, Niacinamide assists in fading out hyperpigmentation on the skin by inhibiting melanosome (pigment cells in the skin).
Increases ceramides and collagen – improves skin hydration by preventing evaporation of moisture from the skin to the environment by growing ceramide. It is especially beneficial if you have eczema or mature skin.
Minimizes pores and treats acne – may help with severe acne such as papules and pustules.
Regulates oil – may regulate the oil of sebaceous glands, thus preventing your glands from producing too much oil and causing blocked pores…. hello clear skin!
Minimizes pore appearance – this is my favorite, as a long-time sufferer of enlarged and blocked pores, niacinamide can reduce your pore size…this is what lead me to my research and why I fell in love with niacinamide.
