    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Foundation settles into lines when the skin underneath is dehydrated. Skin prep is the fix that most women skip while they shop for a new foundation.
    • The routine is five steps: cleanse, mist, hydrating serum, moisturiser or hydrating glaze, then primer. Wait two to three minutes before primer and again before foundation.
    • Layer thin, water-based hydration rather than one heavy cream. Skip facial oils right before foundation; they cause slipping.
    • Dry skin adds a richer moisturiser under the glaze. Oily skin swaps the moisturiser for the glaze alone and uses an oil-free serum.
    • Every product here is stocked at VAMS Beauty, with free standard shipping on Australian orders over $100.

Here is the thing nobody tells you when you are standing at a makeup counter: the foundation you are about to buy will settle into your fine lines exactly the way your old one did, unless the skin underneath changes. Foundation is a thin film. It can only ever look as smooth as the surface it is sitting on.

This is the routine we use and recommend at VAMS Beauty for a base that looks like skin at 9am and still looks like skin at 4pm. It sits between our Skincare and Makeup edits on purpose, because it is where the two meet. For the bigger picture, start with why foundation settles into fine lines and how to stop it.

Why does skin prep stop foundation settling into fine lines?

Dehydrated skin has fine surface texture that foundation grabs onto and collects in. Hydrating in thin layers before makeup smooths that texture, so foundation sits on top of the skin and moves with it instead of settling into the lines. Well-prepped skin also needs less foundation, and less foundation is the other half of stopping creasing.

Think of foundation on dehydrated skin like paint on unsanded timber. It goes into every grain. Hydration is the sanding. When the surface of your skin is comfortably hydrated it looks plumper and smoother, the lines that come from dryness soften, and foundation has far less to catch on. That is why the women whose makeup looks best at 50 are rarely the ones with the most expensive foundation. They are the ones who never skip the serum.

The 5-step skin prep routine before foundation

This takes about six minutes including the waiting, and the waiting is not optional.

    1. Cleanse gently. A cream, milk or gentle gel cleanser in the morning. Nothing foaming and stripping; you are trying to keep moisture in, not take it out. Pat dry, and leave the skin very slightly damp.
    2. Mist. Spray a hydrating facial mist over the whole face. It gives the serum a damp surface to spread over and starts the hydration layering. The LAMAV Rose Hydrating Mist ($40) with rose water, aloe, Kakadu plum and hyaluronic acid is the one we reach for, and it doubles as your finishing mist over makeup later.
    3. Hydrating serum. Two or three drops of a hyaluronic-acid serum pressed into damp skin. This is the step that makes the biggest visible difference to how foundation sits. The biobod Replenishing Hydra-Soothe Serum ($65) is oil-free, lightweight and designed for sensitive, reactive skin, which makes it a safe choice under makeup for almost everyone.
    4. Moisturiser or hydrating glaze, then wait. Seal the serum with a light moisturiser, or with the VANI-T Face Base Glazing Milk ($52.95), which hydrates and primes in one and leaves a smooth, glazed-looking finish. Wait two to three minutes so it fully absorbs. Foundation over a wet layer slides and separates.
    5. Primer, then wait again. One pump of a hydrating primer pressed from the centre of the face outward. On mature and dry skin the LAMAV Organic Bio-Active Primer ($49) is our pick; we explain why in the best primer to stop foundation creasing. Wait one minute, then foundation, thinly.

Skin prep for dry and mature skin

Dry and mature skin needs every one of the five steps, plus a little more at step four. Use a proper moisturiser from our moisturisers collection, let it absorb, and then apply the Glazing Milk over it as a second, thinner layer of hydration before primer. Two thin layers hydrate better than one thick one and, importantly, do not leave the slippery surface that a heavy cream can.

If your skin still feels tight before foundation, the problem is overnight, not morning. See the night-before section below. And be patient with the waiting: dry skin drinks in product slowly, so give the moisturiser a full three minutes.

Skin prep for oily and combination skin

Oily skin still needs hydration; it just needs it without oil. Dehydrated oily skin overproduces oil, which lifts foundation and lets it re-settle into lines by lunchtime. Keep the mist and the oil-free serum, skip the moisturiser and use the Glazing Milk alone at step four, then a half-pump of primer. If you are oily only through the T-zone, use the full routine on the cheeks and the lighter version down the centre of the face. Blot before you powder, and powder only where you shine.

Five prep mistakes that make foundation crease

    • Facial oil right before foundation. Oils are beautiful at night. Under foundation they cause slipping and separation. Keep them to your evening routine.
    • Not waiting. Foundation over a wet serum or moisturiser spreads unevenly and dries down patchy. Two to three minutes changes everything.
    • One heavy cream instead of thin layers. A thick cream sits on top and makes foundation slide. Mist, serum and a light moisturiser or glaze hydrate more with less residue.
    • Skipping the serum on "quick" mornings. The serum is the step that smooths the surface. If you only have time for one thing, make it that.
    • Exfoliating in the morning. Physical exfoliation before makeup leaves the surface raw and grabby. Exfoliate at night, once or twice a week, from our exfoliants collection.

What to do the night before

Morning prep works best on skin that was hydrated overnight. A hydrating serum and a nourishing moisturiser or facial oil at night, and a rich eye balm around the eyes, mean you wake up with skin that is already halfway prepped. Our eye balm guide covers the under-eye side of this, which is where concealer creasing starts. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week at night keeps the surface smooth so there is less texture for foundation to find.

    Skin prep FAQs

What skincare routine helps foundation not settle into fine lines?

Cleanse, then hydrate in layers: a facial mist, a hyaluronic-acid serum, and a moisturiser or hydrating glaze. Wait two to three minutes so it absorbs, then apply a hydrating primer. Well-hydrated skin looks smoother and plumper, so foundation sits on top instead of collecting in lines. Skip facial oils immediately before foundation.

How do I prep dry skin for foundation so it doesn't settle?

Mist, hydrating serum, moisturiser, then a thin layer of hydrating glaze, waiting a full three minutes for each to absorb, then a hydrating primer. Two thin layers of hydration work better than one heavy cream, which can make foundation slide. Hydrate well at night too.

Should I put moisturiser on before foundation?

Yes, a light one, and let it absorb for two to three minutes before primer. Moisturiser gives foundation a smooth, hydrated surface to sit on. If your skin is oily, a hydrating glaze or gel moisturiser is enough; if it is dry, use a proper moisturiser and add a glaze over it.

How long should I wait between skincare and foundation?

Two to three minutes after your moisturiser or glaze, and one minute after primer. Foundation applied over a wet layer spreads unevenly and dries down patchy, which shows most in fine lines. Use the time to do your hair.

What products make foundation last longer without accentuating wrinkles?

A hydrating mist, a hyaluronic-acid serum, a light moisturiser or hydrating glaze, and a hydrating primer, in that order. Together they give foundation a smooth surface to sit on so you can use less of it, and less foundation is what stops it settling into wrinkles. Finish with a mist over makeup.

Can I use a facial mist over foundation?

Yes. A light hydrating mist sprayed over finished makeup softens any powdery look and helps foundation look like skin. The LAMAV Rose Hydrating Mist can be used before makeup, over it, and through the day to refresh, especially in air-conditioning.
